Adapt to any adverse weather and drive safely

Whether it’s raining, sleeting or snowing, severe weather can be frightening and dangerous for motorists, but if you can conform your driving to fit the conditions, you’ll stay safe behind the wheel.

Motorists should know the safety rules when dealing with slick pavement and inclement winter weather because those conditions are prevalent in the Midwest. The average snowfall in Missouri each winter is 18.6 inches, and southern Illinois can get up to 48 inches of precipitation each year. Southern Indiana’s temperature typically dips into the teens and lower each winter.

To keep drivers safe when the weather is bad, AAA offers two free pamphlets: How to Go on Ice and Snow and Get a Grip–A Guide to Wet-Weather Driving Techniques. They offer tips on pre-paring your car for inclement conditions and handling them from the driver’s seat.

For instance, both pamphlets recommend motorists keep their tires properly inflated to optimize traction and vehicle control.

Motorists should accelerate and decelerate slowly in slick conditions. On snowy or icy roads, everything takes longer, including accelerating, stopping and turning, so give yourself time to maneuver by driving slowly. And both pamphlets contain an explanation of how to regain control of your car during a skid.

For a free copy of each brochure, send a stamped, self-addressed, business-size envelope to AAA, 12901 N. Forty Drive, St. Louis, MO, 63141. Please note which brochure you want. If you want both brochures, use 59 cents worth of stamps on the return envelope. To read the brochures online, visit www.AAA.com and click on the News/Safety section.

Map routes easily with online TripTiks

The AAA TripTik Travel Planner offers one-stop shopping for all-in-one maps, directions and travel information, and its one best feature is that it is easy to use.

The following quick tips will help you use the enhanced features of the online program, available at AAA.com, and create personalized maps full of all the information you need to plan a trip including hotels, restaurants and points of interest.

• Easy route modification: Click and drag the highlighted route to the roads you prefer to travel. You’ll get updated mileage and distance information.

• More tools: Right-click on the map for more navigation options, such as pan, zoom, and identify roads.

• Change your schedule: If you have chosen multiple destinations, you can click and drag anywhere on an itinerary line to modify the order.

• Zoom Zoom: Double-click on a map to zoom in; hold down the Control key and double-click to zoom out.

• Custom zoom: Mouse over the zoom bar to view labels to help differentiate what is displayed at different zoom levels.

• Easy return: Use Control+Shift+Home as a shortcut to return to the overview map.

• Custom maps: Click on any part of the routing text description to view a close-up section of your route. If there are any available AAA Approved hotels, restaurants, and attractions for that area, you can click on it to add it to MyPlaces. A pop-box will appear with that location. If you want to add it to your routing, click the check-box next to “Add to My Places.” When you’re ready to print your TripTik, make sure “My Places maps and guide” is selected so you can print full-color maps showing just the places you choose.

• Hotel booking at low rates: As you move the pointer over a hotel icon, a bubble opens with clickable choices for details (including Diamond ratings and photos) or reservations at great rates.
