Tips On Travel

Good travel values for winter

Travelers may be tightening their purse strings but not all destinations are feeling the pinch. As travel consumers continue to look for ways to get the most out of their money, suppliers are reporting increases in destinations like Mexico, South America, the Caribbean–even exotic destinations like India.

There are also gains in domestic travel, including homeport cruising. In August, Carnival announced it will move the 2,758-passenger Triumph to New Orleans, effective November 2009. The change represents a 34 percent capacity increase in New Orleans.

Travel Impressions, a preferred AAA Travel vendor, this year saw increases in travel to Mexico because of the many all-inclusive resorts and favorable exchange rates. Another AAA vendor, Tauck World Discovery, says exotic destinations in South America, India and Egypt sold well in 2008.

For travelers interested in Europe, visiting during the off-season saves money. Trafalgar Tours, a preferred AAA vendor, has deals now through April. Ask about the “value season” specials.

Air travel process not working well

More than half of surveyed travelers think the air travel system is deteriorating and list inefficient security screening and flight cancellations as their top frustrations.

The research was conducted by Peter D. Hart Research Associates and The Winston Group earlier this year for the Travel Industry Association. The study also found travelers were not irritated with the airlines. Half of those polled said the air travel system is not likely to improve in the near future.

As a result, air travelers avoided some 41 million trips over the past year.

Family travel is on the rise

Family travel has grown by 40 percent since 2001, according to Hotel Interactive, an online resource for the hospitality industry.

While there are many travel choices–from cruises to all-inclusive resorts–offering families a chance to do their own thing on their vacation, there also are options to travel together and share vacation experiences.

One such option is the Tauck Bridges program offered by Tauck World Discovery. Choose from more than a dozen trips in North or Central America, Europe–even Africa–each tour providing the opportunity for shared enrichment.
