Protect your home when you’re away

Many people will take a vacation to “get away from it all” this summer, but unfortunately, some vacationers will return home to find “it all” is no longer there.

Home burglaries generally are higher during peak travel months. Nationally, a burglary occurs every 13 seconds. Yet many home burglaries could be prevented by taking the following precautions, AAA advises.

Many burglars enter a house through a window, so close and lock all house and garage windows and doors. Slide locks are recommended for sliding glass doors.

So your house does not appear vacant, leave curtains in their normal position. Also, move expensive items away from windows. Ask a close neighbor or friend to pick up your mail or have the U.S. Postal Service hold your mail. Temporarily cancel your newspaper subscription.

Set an automatic timer so interior lights and radios periodically turn on and off. If you own a second car, park and lock it in the driveway to deter potential burglars from pulling a vehicle close to your house.

Ask a trusted friend to inspect your house regularly, and never leave spare keys hidden under doormats or anywhere outside the house.

App puts room reservations at your fingertips

Whether you need a hotel a few hours from now or a few months from now, AAA members now can make reservations with the touch of a few buttons through the AAA TripTik® Mobile application.

The free app for iPhone and Android smartphone users features first-of-its-kind functionality–powered by Travelocity Partner Network–to put hotel room reservations at users’ fingertips via their smartphone or tablet. With the enhanced app, users can research property amenities and take advantage of AAA member room rates.

Gas station locations, frequently updated gas prices, and electric vehicle charging stations are other features available with the app.

Smartphone users can download the free GPS-based AAA TripTik® Mobile app from the iTunes Store, Android Market, or find more information at AAA.com/Mobile.

Additional apps include AAA Discounts, which displays nearby member discount locations, and AAA Roadside, which enables members who need roadside rescue to send AAA their location and breakdown details. The AAA Insurance app guides users on what to do after a traffic crash, and AAA Auto Buying Tools helps buyers view car pricing and more.

Vin Etch can help deter vehicle theft

As an effective theft deterrent, the Club will offer window etching of your vehicle’s VIN (vehicle identification number) at several AAA offices this summer.

The cost for the service is $30 for AAA members and $40 for non-members, including six etchings per car. AAA offers discounts on insurance for VIN Etching.

Call 1-800-AAA-ROAD ext. 6821 to make appointments at least 48 hours in advance of the below dates. Please have your VIN number handy when calling for appointments.
