AAA helps travelers find places to stay and play with pets

Pets are great companions at home, and for a growing number of people, they are loyal companions on the road, as well.

According to the American Pet Products Association’s 2011–2012 survey, almost 11 million dog caregivers had taken their pets on a trip within the previous month, and 23 percent of caregivers said they are willing to travel with their dogs for more than two nights.

To help travelers hit the road with their pets, AAA is updating its “Traveling with Your Pet: The AAA PetBook®,” which provides up-to-date information on more than 14,000 places to stay and play with pets. Listings include pet-friendly AAA Approved and Diamond-rated lodgings across the United States and Canada. Details include fees, permitted pet sizes, conditions of stay, and pet amenities.

For outdoor lovers, the book also lists more than 600 pet-friendly campgrounds and RV parks, as well as AAA Approved attractions that offer kennel service or allow pets. Readers will find tips on preparing four-legged travelers for the road or air, pet etiquette, insurance, and emergency animal clinic locations.

While AAA takes care of the content of the book, the cover is up to you. Travelers can enter photos of their pets enjoying vacation activities in AAA’s annual photo contest for the chance to see their pet on the cover of the next edition when it is released in May.

For the fifth consecutive year, “The AAA PetBook®” Photo Contest is sponsored by Best Western, which has more than 1,600 pet-friendly hotels worldwide. The contest is open through Nov. 30, 2012. Entries are judged on artistic qualities and ability to convey the joys of traveling with a pet. Rules and entry forms are available at

The book is available at full service AAA offices for $12.95 for members and $18.95 for nonmembers. A list of officescan be found here. Digital editions for e-readers are available via online booksellers.

Half of travelers with pets say they would bring their pets on vacation if they could, according to a AAA/Best Western survey.
