AAA adds pet coverage to auto insurance

At a time when nearly 73 million U.S. households own a pet, AAA is making its auto insurance even more valuable and useful with the addition of pet coverage.

Pet ownership has been climbing in recent years. According to the 2011-2012 American Pet Products Association National Pet Owners Survey, 62 percent of U.S. households own a pet today, which equates to 72.9 million homes. In 1988, the first year the survey was conducted, 56 percent of U.S. households owned a pet.

Under the new AAA coverage, if a domestic dog or cat owned by the insured or a household member is injured as a direct result of an auto loss while the pet is occupying an insured auto, AAA will pay up to $1,000 for reasonable and necessary veterinary expenses. If the dog or cat dies because of the injuries, the payment is reduced by any veterinary expenses paid already.

Also, if a pet dog or cat is lost as a direct result of a theft of the insured’s car and the pet is not recovered, AAA will pay $1,000 for the loss of the dog or cat.

No deductible applies to the coverage, and $1,000 is the most AAA will pay for one covered loss regardless of the number of pet dogs or cats injured, killed or lost.

AAA deters car theft with VIN etching

As an effective theft deterrent, the Club will offer window etching of your vehicle’s VIN (vehicle identification number) at several AAA offices this spring.

The cost for the service is $30 for AAA members and $40 for non-members, including six etchings per car. AAA offers discounts on auto insurance for VIN Etching. To make appointments, call 1-800-AAA-ROAD ext. 6821 (with your VIN number handy) at least 48 hours before the below dates.
