Awareness is your best weapon to help guard against identity theft

Identity theft remains one of the fastest-growing crimes in the nation, according to the Federal Trade Commission, but AAA members can arm themselves with the best defense against the crime: awareness.

The crime of identity theft involves using someone else’s personal information, such as an account number, to commit fraud. Reclaiming your identity can be costly, time consuming, and stressful. That’s why it’s important to monitor your name and your credit.

To help, AAA offers a pair of identity theft monitoring products: ProtectMyID® Essential and ProtectMyID® Deluxe.

Members who are 18 and older can receive free identity theft monitoring with ProtectMyID Essential. This benefit includes: daily monitoring of your Experian® credit report, e-mail alerts when key changes are detected, lost wallet protection, and fraud resolution support. AAA Premier members with ProtectMyID Essential receive the additional benefit of $10,000 in identity theft insurance at no extra charge.

Members can gain an extra level of protection by purchasing ProtectMyID Deluxe at a discounted monthly rate of $8.95. The program enhances the ProtectMyID Essential membership by offering daily monitoring of all three credit bureau reports; Internet scans for criminal activity involving your identity; ChildSecure® alerts if accounts are opened in your child’s name; and $1 million in identity theft insurance for all enrolled members.

You can enroll in either product by visiting or by calling (877) 440-6943. Those enrolled in earlier identity theft monitoring products with AAA can continue to use those products or call to request to be moved into one of these new products.
