Nissan adds tweaks to Altima Sedan for 2014.

Altima is Nissan’s best-selling model in the United States and after a complete makeover in 2013, this year’s Altima sedan received minor upgrades, including mitigating engine noise. The stylish profile added chrome exhaust tips and new apps for its sophisticated NissanConnect communication link.

The front-wheel drive, five-passenger Altima has won several “Best Of” awards for design and performance. The 2.5 SL–top of line of the four 2.5 Altima trims–was our test-drive. Altimas now use a continuously variable transmission with minimum power lag–and much less noise–between throttle requests.

Our tester had a $1,000 technology package loaded with safety features and a navigation system manipulated on a multi-functional dashboard screen. Included were blind spot and lane departure warning programs and moving object detection complimenting the rear view camera.

Online voice searches help drivers find fuel prices, movie times, stock updates, weather, music, etc. An Advanced Drive-Assist shows speed limit, eco-driving maps, split-screen display, and upcoming curves.

BOSE audio resonated well and the Bluetooth connection was easy but chirped intermittently while repeatedly accessing Android Smartphone.

Our wallet-friendly tester averaged 35 mpg using regular gas on a 400-mile trip with minimal city driving. Straight ahead steering bias and NASA-inspired front seat design made the trip very comfortable. Interior space is ample and cargo space commodious.

Likes: Looks, mpg, power, ride, handling, quiet, comfort
Dislikes: Bluetooth link
Bottom Line: Easy to see why Altima will continue to be a best-selling sedan
