Regular maintenance may save costly repairs for your vehicle

Keeping your vehicle's maintains updated is one more chore on your “to do” list, and sometimes, the task falls through the cracks. But over time, not following through with maintenance directives can lead to costly problems for vehicle owners. Following your vehicle's maintenance schedule can help to ensure the vehicle operates safely and efficiently, in addition to retaining resale value.

For October's Car Care Month, AAA auto experts list five examples of recommended maintenance for your vehicle.

Tire Pressure: Over-inflated tires ride roughly and suffer premature wear, while under-inflated tires decrease fuel economy and can overheat and fail at highway speeds. Check the tire pressures (including the spare) once a month when the tires are cold. Follow inflation pressure recommendations on the vehicle's door jamb or under the trunk's lid, as well as in your owner's manual, but not on the tire sidewall.

Engine Air Filter: This filter prevents dust and dirt from entering the engine. A clogged air filter can reduce engine performance and fuel economy. Check the filter every six months or 7,500 miles. Hold it up to a 60-watt light bulb; if you can't see light through the filter, time to replace.

Battery Cables/Clamps/Terminals: If these components become corroded or loose, your car won't have the power it needs to start the engine and operate other systems. Inspect the battery cables, clamps, and connections at each oil change. Have your repair shop clean and tighten as necessary.

Windshield Washer Fluid: A dirty windshield can compromise your vision of the road. Check the fluid reservoir monthly.

Engine Oil: Without an adequate supply of clean oil, your vehicle's engine will wear more rapidly and could even seize and be destroyed. Change the engine oil and filter at the specified intervals. Always use the weight of oil recommended by the vehicle's manufacturer.

AAA Approved Auto Repair shops offer 24-month/24,000-mile parts and labor guarantees, as well as a 10-percent discount on regularly priced parts and labor (up to $50). For details, visit or call (314) 523-7350, Ext. 8161.
