Brain training for smarter driving

With the goal of helping older motorists see more of their surroundings, react faster, and reduce their risk of an accident, AAA offers DrivesharpTM, an online brain-training program with proven results.

Developed by Posit Science®, a leading provider of brain training programs, Drivesharp is designed to improve peripheral awareness and reaction speed through interactive exercises.

Free access to the program is available online for AAA members who have AAA auto insurance and are 65 or older. For all other members, the program costs $49. Qualified insureds who complete the program could receive a 10-percent discount off their insurance premium.

More than 7,000 members have completed the course since AAA began offering it in 2011. Of those policyholders with AAA insurance coverage before and after completing Drivesharp, there was a 30-percent drop in their collision claims in the six months following completion of the course.

Annual cost to drive hits six-year low

Due to falling gas prices, the annual cost to own and operate a vehicle in the United States has fallen to a six-year low of $8,558 according to AAA’s 2016 Your Driving Costs study.

This year, a driver can expect to spend 57 cents for each mile driven, approximately $713 per month, to cover the fixed and variable costs associated with owning and operating a car. Fixed costs are comprised of such things as insurance, licensing fees, and taxes. Variable costs include such day-to-day expenses as gas, tires, and maintenance.

In addition to calculating the driving costs for sedans, AAA determined annual costs associated with both minivans and sport utility vehicles. Owners of these vehicles also benefit from lower driving costs in 2016, at $9,262 and $10,255 respectively.

AAA’s cost estimates are different for business-related use of a personal vehicle. Such payments cover operating costs for mileage and only a portion of the fixed costs.

The findings from the study, including a breakdown of costs by category of vehicle and various annual mileages, are contained in the Your Driving Costs brochure. It also features a table for you to determine the driving costs for your car.
