Save on prescriptions for every family member, including the furry ones

Pets rule our hearts and sometimes our wallets. According to the American Pet Products Association, Americans spent more than $60 billion on pets in 2015.

Even those of us who do not splurge on diamond-studded cat collars or cashmere-lined dog beds are spending more on pet health. There are increasingly sophisticated veterinary services available, and we are protecting and treating our pets with more medications. Cats and dogs can suffer from chronic conditions, such as asthma, allergies, and diabetes. Glaucoma and arthritis are more common in dogs. Urinary tract infections and chronic upper respiratory issues are more common in cats.

The most frequently prescribed remedies for pets are antibiotics, antifungals, steroids, and pain relievers. The cost for medications to manage these conditions can add up. However, even an old owner can learn new tricks when it comes to saving on pet health

First, ask your vet about generic equivalents for your pet's medications. Also, ask if the drug prescribed for your pet is one of the 600 medications also used by humans. If so, you may find better prices at your local drugstore.

Finally, use your AAA Prescription Savings discount. Leading pharmacy chains across the country offer AAA members discounts of up to 75 percent on prescriptions. (Savings are typically higher for generics.) AAA Prescription Savings is a free member benefit. Just go to to locate the nearest participating pharmacy and print your AAA Prescription Savings card. AAA Prescription Savings is not insurance. Discounts are only available from participating pharmacies.
